Gonzalez pleads not guilty to murder charge

WESTMORELAND — A St. Marys man charged with second-degree murder and aggravated assault pleaded not guilty to his charges in Pottawatomie County District Court Tuesday.

Pablo Gonzalez, 21, will have a week-long jury trial starting Aug. 25.

He was arrested in January in connection with the New Year’s Day death of Levi Bishop, 24, of Rossville.

County prosecuting attorney Sherri Schuck said Gonzalez waived his right to a speedy trial because his attorney had other trials pending through May, and there was still evidence testing that needed to be completed for his case.

Gonzalez was arrested after Bishop was found dead from a gunshot wound in a car that pulled up to the St. Marys police station around 4:45 a.m. on the holiday.

Pottawatomie County authorities said Gonzalez was in the same vehicle as the victim.

Gonzalez, who is confined in the Pottawatomie County jail on a $1 million bond, is scheduled for a motions hearing on June 20 and a pre-trial hearing on Aug. 11.
