Geary County candidate may ask for recount

By The Mercury

A former Riley County Police Department chief was expected to decide later Tuesday whether to ask for a recount in a Geary County race he appeared to have narrowly lost Monday.

Larry Hicks, the Democratic incumbent second district commissioner, was declared the winner by 16 votes Monday in a contest with Republican Mike Watson. Watson headed the RCPD from 2000 until his retirement a few years ago.

Hicks originally led the balloting by six votes, a margin that was increased to 11 when a previously uncounted container of votes was discovered, and then to 16 when provisional ballots were counted.

ā€œIā€™m meeting with supporters at noon to decide whether to ask for a recount,ā€ Watson said.
