Gas line rupture forces closure of Fort Riley Blvd.

By The Mercury

A gas line ruptured near Stagg Hill late Tuesday morning, forcing authorities to close traffic along a stretch of K-18 just west of the city for a time.

The rupture was reported in an 8-inch lineabout 200 yards north of Stagg Hill, and it forced the closure of K-18 between Seth Child Road and Scenic Drive. Traffic was being diverted along various other routes.

Authorities also shut down flights into and out of Manhattan Regional Airport until the threat from the leaking gas could be controlled.  Some offficers patrolled nearby residential areas, advising residents of the situation in the event any wanted to evacuate

At mid-day, it was not clear what caused the rupture. Officers indicated shortly before 1 p.m., however, that the leak was in the process of being controlled, with the prospect that the road may be re-opened. There were no reports of damage.
