Fun tools for new school year

By Bethany Knipp

A celebration for parents and a dread for some students, the summer’s nearly over and it’s time for kids to go back to class and hit the books… and also get the books.

Back-to-school shopping has been in full swing for weeks and with USD 383 students heading back to class on Tuesday, plenty of families were still making last-minute trips to local stores. Stores are feeling the havoc of the season, too.

“About afternoon, it explodes and you can hardly get down the aisles,” Sherri Dodson, a Walmart stationery department manager, said.

Though back to school shopping can be expensive with extensive school supply lists and multiple children to buy for, there might be relief in knowing many of supplies — even fun, trendy items — are under $5. That includes a lot of traditional supplies that many students need, including crayons, glue sticks, most pens, pencils and hand sanitizer.

Here are just a few cool school supplies we found, all under $5.

Ball point pens, $2.97, Walmart 18-pack washable kids’ paint, $2.94, Target Rubber band balls, $1.99, Staples Correction tape, $3, Staples 3x5 index card case, $1, Staples
