A 24-year-old Fort Riley soldier was killed Tuesday in Afghanistan.

Pfc. Cody Moosman died Tuesday of injuries sustained during an attack on his unit, according to the U.S. Department of Defense.

The unit had been in Paktika province near the border of Pakistand, when it came under small-arms fire. Sen. Jerry Moran said Moosman was on guard duty at the time.

Moosman, who was from southeastern Idaho, had wanted to be a soldier since the third grade, according to a statement from his family.

He was a member of B Company, 1st Battallion, 28th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division. He enlisted in 2010, Fort Riley officials told the Associated press that Moosman arrived at the post in April 2011. This was his first deployment.
