Francis Michael Strunk, 84, of Wamego, died Friday at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan. He was a long-time resident of the area.

The family provided some of the following information.

Francis was born Dec. 28, 1929, in St. Marks. He was the son of Joseph and Margaret Mohr Strunk. He attended local schools and graduated from Andale High School in 1948.

Francis served his country in the Korean War, 5th Army, 7th Division, 17th Infantry, from May 18, 1951, to March 9, 1953. He was an infantryman and radio operator. He then served in the Army Reserves until March 21, 1957.

Francis was a farmer and dairy farmer. He started his farming career at Colwich and then in 1971 moved to the family farm north west of Blaine.

He also was the maintenance supervisor at the Westy Community Care Home in Westmoreland for 18 years. He moved to Wamego in 1985.

Francis was a member of American Legion in Frankfort, the VFW in Manhattan, St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Wamego and the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed baking and was known for his homemade bread and cinnamon rolls. He loved to spend time visiting with his friends and family.

Francis married Vera Suther on May 15, 1954, in Blaine. She survives at their home.

He is also survived by daughters, Mary Jeter of Prairie Village, Barbara Staggenborg (Mark) and Kathy Howell (Pat), both of Overland Park, Denise Sandmann (Andy) of Frankfort, Helen Benfer of Manhattan, Lori Leonard (Chad) of Wichita, and Angie Boles (Carl) of Scottsdale, Ariz.; his sons, Fred Strunk (Diane) Shenandoah, Iowa, Mike Strunk ( Kathy) of Silver Lake, Greg Strunk (Mary Jane) of Home City, John Strunk (Deborah) of Derby, Jerry Strunk (Cindy) of Rowlett, Texas, Paul Strunk (Jana) of Manhattan; his sisters, Mary Siewert (Clem) of Goddard, Joan Hemmen (John) of Colwich, Helen Blasi (Leroy) of Andale, Betty Stolz (Tim) of Colwich; his brothers, Paul Strunk (Ita) if La Luz, N.M., Louis Strunk and Tom Strunk (Rita), both of Colwich; thirty two grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Raymond and William Strunk.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Wamego. The Rev. Mike Peterson will be the Celebrant. Burial with military honors will follow at St. Bernard’s Catholic Cemetery. Mr. Strunk will lie in state on Tuesday starting at 3 p.m. at the church, where the family will greet friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. A rosary prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m.
