Flint Hills Soccer Club to hold indoor soccer

The Flint Hills Soccer Club is holding an indoor winter soccer fun program at the Luckey Junior High gym this winter. The program features 10 groups, with nine youth groups open to boys and girls from 6-18 years old. The other group is open to men and women 19 years and older. The participants will meet on Saturdays for 10 sessions throughout the months of January, February and March. The size of the programs are limited to 20 players in each group. During the each of the 10 sessions players in each group are randomly assigned to teams and play each other in a World Cup-style round robin.

There is a non-refundable participation fee per player for the entire program. The fee is $57 for the youth program groups and $63 for the adult program.

Manhattan Cross Country Club places 11th at meet

The Manhattan Cross Country Club was the top placing girls team from Kansas at the Nike Heartland Regional Cross Country Championships.

The squad placed 11th in the 32-team field.

It’s the highest finish ever for a Manhattan team in the girls championship division of the Nike regionals.

Cara Melgares led Manhattan’s effort with a 40th place finish in a career-best time of 18:27 for 5K.

She was followed by Michelle Sanchez (89th, 19:07), Clara Mayfield (141st, 19:41), Amber Gloria (147th, 19:48), Joy Gruenbacher (158th, 19:54), and Maddie Purdom (174th, 20:04).

Harkin wins Winter Sweet 16

Jillian Harkin of Manhattan won the championship of the Winter Sweet 16 tennis tournament this past weekend.

Harkin, competing in the girls 12-and-under division, split the first two sets of the final, 6-7, 6-3, and won the supertiebreaker, 10-6. Leading up to the final, Harkin beat two Oklahoma players and one from Missouri. She came in to the tournament seeded No. 2 and is now the top-ranked player in her age division in the Missouri Valley.

Her brother, Daniel Harkin, took seventh at the boys 14-and-under Sweet 16.
