Manhattan’s first baby of the new year was born Wednesday to a Mercy Regional Health Center labor and delivery nurse.

Amaia Gloria Banks was born at 3:24 a.m. Wednesday to Danielle and Mike Banks of Manhattan, the first birth of 2014 at the hospital. She weighed 6 pounds, 12 ounces and was 20 1/2 inches long.

Danielle said she was glad to be among her coworkers for the delivery.

“It’s very comforting to be around people who you know and who know her,” she said. “You know the kind of care they provide. They’re an awesome group of girls.”

Danielle said they weren’t expecting the new baby so soon; her due date was still a month away.

“It was definitely a surprise,” she said.

Amaia has two siblings at home. Danielle said big brother Kameron and big sister Alivia are excited to welcome her to the family.
