Fire leaves 3,000 without power

By The Mercury

About 3,000 Westar customers were affected Monday night when equipment failure at a power line on South Manhattan Avenue and Fort Riley Boulevard caused a roughly hour long power outage.

The Manhattan Fire Department responded to the power line at about 7:45 p.m. for reports of a transformer on fire, but department officials said it burned itself out.

The outage affected an area roughly between Third Street and Manhattan Avenue and power was restored by about 8:40 p.m.

Westar representatives said a failed arrester caused the problem.
