A Manhattan man died Sunday in an early morning accident in Butler County after his vehicle overturned.

James Ponce, 29, was pronounced dead at the scene after his vehicle rolled multiple times and landed on its top on Highway 77, about 10 miles north of El Dorado.

Officials said Ponce was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle.

The accident occurred at about 4:30 a.m.

Deputies with the Butler County Sheriff’s Office, fire crews and EMS responded to the scene, but officials said they were unable to revive Ponce.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation.

Ponce was a long-time Manhattan resident, having graduated from Manhattan High School in 2001. He also attended Kansas State University and Manhattan Area Technical College.
