Even the KU newspaper is roughing up the Jayhawks

By The Mercury

To say that the 1-3 KU Jayhawks aren’t getting any love on the eve of their game here Saturday with 4-0 K-State would be an understatement. But even so, the cover of Thursday University Daily Kansan was a shock to Jayhawk head coach Charlie Weis.

That cover featured a drawing of an overly muscled purple Wildcat playing rough with a cowed Jayhawk beneath the headline “Road Kill Ahead.”

After seeing the cover, Weis issued this tweet: “Team slammed by our own school newspaper. Amazing! No problem with opponents paper or local media. You deserve what you get! But, not home!”

The KU head coach followed that with a second tweet partially backing away from his earlier remarks. It read: “I personally could care less. You are what are. On the other hand, if I don’t support the players good or bad, who will??”

The drawing prompted plenty of other reaction. These were among our favorites:

“I don’t want to live in a world where there are upright walking cats with abs like that.” Anonymous comment on bigleadsports.com.

“I’m more freaked out that that cat has grown an opposable thumb. HE CAN OPEN DOORS, NOW!!!” Response to anonymous comment on bigleadsports.com

“Weis has one win as the head coach at Kansas. The University Daily Kansas has won two consecutive College Newspaper of the Year awards (circulation over 30,000 division) from the College Newspaper Business & Advertising Managers. Keep up the good work – the newspaper, that is. Weis needs to win more games.” Paul Myerberg, USA Today sports

“If Weis really wants better treatment from the student newspaper, we have a simple suggestion: Don’t lose to Rice and Northern Illinois.” Jerry Hinnen, CBS Eye On College Sports blogger.
