Derby defeats Manhattan, 55-20

By Grant Guggisberg

Top-ranked Derby ended the Manhattan High football team’s season Friday night with a 55-20 Class 6A playoff win at Bishop Stadium.

In the beginning, Manhattan (9-2) got the start it wanted when Henry Bieber dropped the opening kick off, picked it up, ran through a facemask and scored on a 90-yard return to give the Indians a quick 7-0 lead.

But it was all Derby (10-1) from there, scoring 48 unanswered points and dominating the game until midway through the fourth quarter when the Indians were able to get a couple of scores against Panthers backups.

The Panthers took a 34-7 lead to halftime and were never really threatened by the Indians, accumulating 295 yards of first-half offense while allowing just 67 yards to the Indians in the first two quarters.

Derby advances to host Garden City next week in the Class 6A semifinals.
