Daniel Steven Rice, 46, died at his residence in Manhattan on September 25.
The family provided some of the following information.
He was born in St. Paul, Minn., on Jan. 15, 1967, to Marion (Haugen) Frank and Roger Frank, and grew up in Hudson, Wis. He was baptized at Bethel Lutheran Church in Hudson in March 1967.
During his youth in Hudson, Dan enjoyed downhill skiing, swimming and boating with his family, biking, and fishing with his Uncle Bob Haugen and his grandparents. He especially enjoyed playing outside with children in his neighborhood on Third Street. He attended Sunday School and summer Bible School at Bethel, and was a member of Cub Scout Pack 21. He advanced to Webelos, and participated in the car and sailboat derbies.
Dan moved from Hudson to Madison, Wis., in 1979, where he and his family joined Bethel Lutheran Church there, and he was active in the Church’s youth activities. While in Madison, he became a talented drummer and had is own set of Ludwig Woodies. He formed a rock band with his friends which brought much enjoyment to him. The family moved to South Burlington, Vt., in 1984, where he graduated from South Burlington High School in 1986. From there, Dan and his family moved to Manhattan due to a family job change. He took classes at Kansas State University and Emporia State University. He was a part-time employee of the USD 383 school district in the 90s.
Dan enjoyed writing poetry and published a book of his poems. He also greatly enjoyed listening to music from classical to jazz to rock and roll. He was an avid reader and enjoyed spending time in the Manhattan Public Library reading room. He especially enjoyed family time around the dining room table at his mother’s home.
Dan is survived by his mother, Marion Kyle and his step-father, Benjamin Kyle of Manhattan; his adoptive father, Frederick Rice of Portland, Maine; his brother, Timothy Rice of Topeka; his sister, Ellen Rice and nephew Thomas Herkenhoff of Minneapolis, Minn.; two step-sisters, Mary Kyle and Shirley (Keith) Vogts of Manhattan; two step-brothers, John Kyle of Lawrence and Benjamin Kyle, Jr. of Liberty, Mo.; his aunts Marilyn Carlson of Blackduck, Minn., and Bea Haugen of Mountain Home, Ark.; uncles, Ed Frank (Joan) of South St. Paul, Minn., and Bill Haugen, Jr.(Arlene) of LaPorte, Ind., and by several cousins and friends. He is also survived by his godmother, Kay Hinzman of Hudson, Wis.
Dan was preceded in death by his father, Roger Frank of Hudson, Wis., in 1970; by his grandparents, Bill and Gwen Haugen of Hudson, George and Agnes Frank of South St. Paul, Minn., and Stanley and Katrina Rice of N.H.; four uncles, Thomas Haugen, Robert Haugen. John Frank, and Rich Carlson; and by his Godfather, Ted Hinzman of Hudson, Wis.
A memorial service for Dan will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9 at Bethel Lutheran Church in Hudson, Wis., with the Rev. John Lestcock officiating. There will be a visitation in the Church narthex at 1 p.m. Inurnment will be immediately following the service at Willow River Cemetery in Hudson.
