Maj. Gen.Paul E. Funk II will take over for Maj. Gen. William C. Mayville Jr. as the commanding general of the 1st Infantry Division and of Fort Riley in a ceremony May 22.
Funk started his career as an armored cavalry platoon leader at Fort Hood, Texas.
He was then assigned to Kirchgoens, Germany, with the 2nd Battalion, 67th Armor Brigade Headquarters and Headquarters Company. He was deployed to Southwest Asia as part of operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm with the 3rd Armored Division.
He has also served as an observer, squadron operations officer and the chief of the exercise division at U.S. Space Command at Peterson Air Force Base, among other Army roles.
Mayville started his military career in 1982 as an infantryman in Georgia. Since then he has taken many roles in the Army including assuming command of the 173rd Airborne Brigade in Vicenza, Italy, in June 2002. He commanded the brigade in March 2003 as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom in Iraq. He also has served as the chief of staff for the U.S. Army Southern European Command and the Combined Joint Task Force 76, Operation Enduring Freedom.
Both men will speak at the change-of-command ceremony at 10 a.m. May 22 at the Cavalry Parade Field.
