KSHSAA announced Tuesday morning that the proposal to split Class 4A in football, basketball, volleyball, baseball and softball has passed by a 42-22 vote by the current 4A schools.
The 64 members will be split into two separate divisions based on enrollment. Each class will crown its own champion and have separate sites for sub-state and state competitions. The split will become effective for the upcoming school year in all sports affected except football, which will begin in 2014.
The move leaves Class 3A, which also has 64 members, but a lesser gap between the top and bottom enrollments, as the biggest class in the state.
