City commissioners approve airport expansion

By Corene Brisendine

City commissioners unanimously approved the $17.3 million construction contract of the Manhattan Regional Airport expansion. Approval is contingent on the city receiving $13.3 million in funding from the Federal Aviation Administration, which will cover about 80 percent of the cost.

In addition, passenger facility fees will cover about $3 million leaving the city’s local cost of about $1 million. Commissioners also approved the use of economic development funds to cover the local match, which will result in no impact on property taxes to complete the expansion.
