By The Mercury

Jury selection began Tuesday for a Manhattan man facing sex crime charges against a child younger than 14 years old.

George L. Ferenz, who was 29 at the time of his arrest in October 2012, is facing charges in Riley County District Court of attempted rape, two counts of aggravated criminal sodomy and two counts of aggravated indecent liberties, all of which were allegedly committed against a child younger than age 14.

Ferenz, who was a Fort Riley soldier, was arrested Oct. 24, 2012, by the base’s Military Police after allegedly committing the crimes Oct. 21, 2012, at 622 Grainfield St.

He was initially charged with rape against a child younger than 14. That charge that was later amended to attempted rape.

Attorney Barry Disney is prosecuting for the state in the case.

Ferenz is represented by attorney W. Scott Toth of Olathe.

His trial is scheduled to last four days — from Tuesday through Friday — in the Division II court with Judge Meryl Wilson presiding.
