Celebrate Veterans Day in Manhattan

The Flint Hills Veterans Coalition will host a “Veterans Day Observance” beginning 7 a.m. on Nov. 9.

Events include a breakfast, parade, commemorative program and banquet.

Displays of military memorabilia, photography and other materials will be in 10 downtown store windows on Poyntz Avenue between Third and Fifth Streets and in the Manhattan Town Center Mall from Nov. 1 to Nov. 12.

Riley County Senior Center will also have a collection displays from Mike Cardella, Jason Walcott, Ben Rivers,  Leon Crotezillie and Art Palmmer on Nov. 5-10. The senior center is open from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and is located at 412 Levenworth St. in Manhattan.

The Veterans Day Breakfast will be 7 - 9 a.m. at VFW Post 1786, 212 S. Fourth St.. Tickets are $5. The breakfast is free to veterans and active duty personnel.

The State and Territorial Flag Display will be at 9 a.m. at the front entrance of City Hall, 1101 Poyntz Ave.

The Veterans Day Honor Parade begins at 9:30 a.m. on Poyntz Avenue in front of the mall. The parade will include soldiers from the 1st Infantry Division, the !st Inf. Div. Band, mounted colorguard and other units. Over 2,000 school children from the area schools will walk in the parade, veteran’s organizations, school bands and more.

The Commemorative Program will begin at 11 a.m. in city hall, with Brig. Gen. Donald M. MacWillie, senior commander of Fort Riley, speaking.

The Veterans Day Recognition Banquet will begin at 6 p.m. at American Legion Post 17, 114 McCall Road. The cost is $12 per person. Call (785) 776-4556 to make reservations.
