Cats struggle Friday at ITA Regional

By The Mercury

K-State was unable to collect a victory from its three doubles pairings in doubles main draw competition Friday at the ITA Regional. With thunderstorms pushing back singles play, doubles competition was held on the six available indoor courts at the Gregg Wadley Indoor Tennis Pavilion.

K-State coach Steve Bietau used two new doubles pairings in No. 6-seeded Petra Niedermayerova/Palma Juhasz and Amina St. Hill/Livia Cirnu, while Iva Bago/Maria Panaite competed together for only the second time this year.

Niedermayerova, hoping to replicate her success from last year’s regional with another freshman partner in Juhasz, lost 8-7 in a close match up with the Oklahoma’s Whitney Wofford /Abbi Melrose despite having a first-round bye. In last year’s regional, the senior paired with Ivana Kubickova advanced all the way to the event’s final before falling to Samantha Vickers/Isaura Enrique of Tulsa.

The duo of St. Hill/Cirnu lost 8-5 to Wichita State’s Abby Stevens/Julia Schiller, while Bago/Panaite lost to the Sooners’ duo of Morgan Chumney/Emma Devine, 8-0.
