Cats’ Cantele earns Big 12 weekly honor

By Joel Jellison

After kicking a game-winning field goal in Kansas State’s 33-31 win over TCU on Saturday, placekicker Jack Cantele earned recognition as the Big 12 Special Teams Co-Player of the Week.

Cantele, who shared the award with Oklahoma’s Jalen Saunders, made a 41-yard field goal with 3 seconds remaining to put the Wildcats ahead on Saturday.

It was the first last-second, game-winning field goal for the Wildcats since 1980 when Jim Jackson made one from 17 yards with 1 second left to beat Colorado, 17-14. It was the Wildcats’ only Big Eight win that season.

Cantele was 4 for 4 against TCU, also making field goals from 31, 34 and 23 yards against the Horned Frogs.

The sophomore from Wichita has now made 11 of his 13 attempts this season. Cantele’s four field goals against TCU was a career-high for a single game.

K-State will play its final home game on Saturday against No. 22 Oklahoma (8-2) at 11 a.m. The game will be televised on Fox Sports 1. The Wildcats are an early 3 1/2-point favorite over the Sooners.
