Carlin challenger criticizes ‘hypocrite’ statement

By The Mercury

The Republican challenger to 66th District State Rep. Sydney Carlin Friday criticized her description of some pro-life Republican legislators as ‘hypocrites’ because they did not support funding for the Kansas Neurological Institute in Topeka.

Lee Modesitt, who is seeking to unseat Carlin in November’s general election, said pro-lifers do “fight for the protection of Kansans with developmental disabilities.”

During an appropriations committee meeting in Topeka earlier this week, Carlin said medically based

abortions were one reason for the decline in the state’s developmentally disabled

population, and described Republicans who did not support funding for KNI as “hypocrites” for that reason.

“It appears to me that my pro choice opponent is satisfied with knowing her votes

to allow more abortions have been an effective method to decreasing the number of disabled

Kansans,” said Modesitt. “It’s a shame that someone who should represent all people, regardless of who they are, would make such incendiary comments.”
