Two area students have been named National Merit Scholars.

Austin Canady, a 2013 Manhattan High graduate, received the National Merit W. Harold Otto Scholarship. He will major in political science at the University of Kansas.

Josh Roberts, a 2013 Rock Creek High graduate, received the National Merit Northwestern University Scholarship. He will major in engineering at Northwestern University.

MHS graduates Canady and Sophia Harms, and Rock Creek graduates Roberts and Dylan Meyer were among the 15,000 seniors named National Merit finalists in February.

To become a finalist, the students and their high schools submitted scholarship applications, which detailed the academic record, participation in extra-curricular activities, leadership ability, an essay and qualifying SAT scores.

The finalists were in the running for a scholarship out of the 2,500 National Merit $2,500 scholarships, about 1,000 corporate-sponsored Merit scholarships and around 4,800 college-sponsored Merit scholarships.
