Campaign for welcome sign on bridge pier nears goal

By Letters to the Editor

To the Editor:

We’ve raised $47,750 in donations and pledges toward our goal of $50,000 for the “Manhat-tan Welcomes You” sign for the east bridge pier. We have re-ceived 118 donations from individuals, couples and businesses, all of whom will have their names placed on a smaller version of the sign on public property in view of the bridge pier.

The late Blaine Thomas was instrumental in convincing the Manhattan City Commission in 1996 to not destroy the art deco bridge piers, and it was Blaine who designed the welcome sign in the art deco style, which will make a dramatic entrance to our fair city.

We’re within $4,250 of reaching our goal and starting construction, which we hope will take place this summer and in time for the start of the school and football season. Tax deductible donations can be made online at, or mailed to the Greater Manhattan Community Found-ation, East Bridge Pier Project, 555 Poyntz Ave., Suite 269, Manhattan, Kansas 66502.
