Businesses should welcome breastfeeding mothers

By Letters to the Editor

To the Editor:

Kansas law states that “a mother may breastfeed in any place she has a right to be.” Breastfeeding Welcome Here, a Kansas Breastfeeding Coalition program, is a way for businesses to identify their establishments as friendly toward breastfeed-ing mothers, and that’s good for business.

Participating businesses in the Breastfeeding Welcome Here program receive a window cling letting the public know that breastfeeding families are welcome. More than 70 percent of new mothers with purchasing power initiate breastfeeding in Manhattan and across Kansas. Breastfeeding families are more likely to frequent businesses where they feel welcome and their values are respected.

The Manhattan area currently has 27 businesses participating in the statewide campaign —more than any other community in Kansas. Visit Kansas Breast-feeding Coalition’s website,  ksbreastfeeding.org, for a list of businesses that have taken the pledge, to sign up your business or to learn more about this continuing project.

The Flint Hills Breastfeeding Coalition invites any business in Manhattan and the surrounding community to join in this easy way to stimulate business and encourage families. Let’s contin-ue to keep our community healthy, comfortable and sup-portive of families by showing our support for breastfeeding mothers.
