By The Mercury

The Optimist Bullets 12-and-under fastpitch softball team won first place in their division of the Bite Outta the Lil’ Apple tournament this past weekend in Manhattan.

The Bullets went 3-0 in pool play and 3-0 in bracket to finish the tournament undefeated.

In pool play, the Bullets defeated the Riley Rebels 8-2. Rachel Allen pitched for the win, striking out 10 Rebel batters. She also hit a two-run home run to help her team to the victory.

Anna Batt and Lawsyn Rowden went 2-for-2 at the plate.

The pool game against the Topeka X-treme was a close contest with Hannah Divine driving in the winning run in the last inning for a 6-5 win.

Pitcher Katie Suther picked up the win, striking out four batters and keeping the X-treme offense in check.  Emma Faulkner hit a solo home run.

Katie Suther would pitch her second consecutive game in pool play against the ThunderStyx.  Katie helped lead the team to an 8-2 win, striking out six batters and driving in a two-run home run of her own.

Orianna Clements hit a smash line drive to score two RBIs in the game.

Bracket play found the Bullets in a rematch against the ThunderStyx.  Katie Suther continued to dominate the opposing batters in this game, striking out six in the 10-4 win.

In the semifinal, the Bullets defeated the Optimist Xplosion 6-3.  Rachel Allen struck out eight from the circle. Hefty and Suther went 2-for-2 and scored two runs apiece.

In the championship game, the Bullets came to bat with time expired, no outs, and down 4-1 to the Chapman Irish.

Bullet batters Anna Batt and Emma Faulkner drew walks to put runners at first and second with no outs.  Sydney Hefty ripped a single to drive in Batt and Faulkner.

Mady Trujillo then drove a single, moving Hefty to third base, still with no outs.  Rachel Allen followed Trujillo with a two-strike double to score Trujillo and Hefty, delivering a 5-4 win for the Bullets and the tournament title.

The Bullets are 17-9-1 in division play for the season. This week the Bullets play in USSSA Kansas State Championship.

The Bullets are Nicole Keller, Anna Batt, Orianna Clements, Hannah Divine, Lawsyn Rowden, Emma Faulkner, Mady Trujillo, Rachel Allen, Sydney Hefty, and Katie Suther.
