The Optimist Bullets 12U fastpitch softball team competed in the Cap City Memorial Day tournament in Topeka. The Bullets went 3-2 over the weekend and were awarded third place.

The Bullets defeated the Topeka Firestorm 3-1 in their first game. Rachel Allen pitched the win for the Bullets, striking out seven batters and allowing only two hits. Hannah Divine scored one run for the Bullets, and Mady Trujillo drove in Sydney Hefty and Orianna Clements for the other two.

The Bullets won their next game in a 13-0 shutout of the Topeka Tropical Storm. Bullet pitcher Katie Suther struck out six batters from the circle, and allowed no hits and only one walk in the outing. Allen hit a three-run home run. Emma Faulkner went 2-for-2 from the plate scoring two runs and three RBIs. Clements went 2-for-2 scoring one run and driving in two RBIs.

The Bullets couldn’t get anything going in their following game against the X-treme, losing 9-3. Sydney Hefty and Trujillo provided the offense for the Bullets, but defensive struggles by the team proved too much to overcome.

The Bullets rebounded to win their next game with a 5-2 victory over the Lunachix. Allen was the winning pitcher for the Bullets notching seven strikeouts from the circle. Suther, Hefty, and Faulkner provided key hits in the game and Allen added a home run to assure the win.

In the semi-final the Bullets were to meet the X-treme again. In a hotly contested game, the Bullets were to come up short in a 5-4 loss, and would go home as third place winners in the tournament.

The Optimist Bullets record is 9-7 in division play for the season. Next week will find the Bullets in Topeka to play in the Cap City Shootout.

The Optimist Bullets are Nicole Keller, Anna Batt, Orianna Clements, Hannah Divine, Lawsyn Rowden, Emma Faulkner, Mady Trujillo, Rachel Allen, Sydney Hefty, and Katie Suther.
