Bullets take second at Council Grove

By The Mercury

The Optimist Bullets fastpitch softball team played its first tournament of the season this weekend in Council Grove.

This was also the first time for the team to compete in the 12-and-under division. In a field that included six other teams, the Bullets finished in second place.

In pool play, the Bullets defeated the Emporia Energy 9-3. Katie Suther was the winning pitcher, striking out five batters. Rachel Allen went 3-for-3 at the plate with four RBIs. Mady Trujillo and Suther drove in two runs each to help in the win.

The Bullets lost in their second game to the Colwich Royals. Both Allen and Suther pitched in the effort. Down 7-1 after two innings, a rally was sparked by hits from Emma Faulkner, Lawsyn Rowden, and Hannah Divine. However the rally was cut short by the clock, and the Bullets lost 8-7 after only three innings of play.

In tournament play, the Bullets defeated the Xplosion 15-0. Allen pitched the win and recorded seven strikeouts in the shut out.

The Bullets advanced to the championship game against the Chapman Irish. Down 3-0, the Bullets came back to tie the Irish in the second inning. The Irish ended up with a 7-4 win.

The Optimist Bullets are Nicole Keller, Anna Batt, Orianna Clements, Divine, Rowden, Faulkner, Trujillo, Allen, Sydney Hefty, and Suther.

The record for the Bullets stands at 2-2 on the season. The Bullets travel next weekend to Lake Shawnee to compete in the Spring Shootout tournament.
