The Optimist Bullets 14-and-under fastpitch softball team played in the Cowgirl Invitational in Abilene this past weekend.
The Bullets went 4-0 in the tournament to win first place. Pitching and defense held opponents to three total runs against the Bullets for the entire event.
In pool play, the Bullets defeated the Pink Panthers 1-0. Rachel Duer pitched the shutout, allowing one walk and only two hits.
The Bullets clinched the No. 1 seed for their pool by defeating the Thunderstyx, 4-1. Alex Hoelscher pitched the win for the Bullets, getting some offensive help with home runs by Duer and Malary Tajchman.
Tajchman scored two runs in the game and Vannah Davies added another run and an RBI.
Rachel collected her second shutout for the Bullets in the semi-final win against the Scrappers, 8-0. Davies knocked in Tajchman with a double to right field for the leading run in the second inning. Mady Trujillo would add two runs and Ashlynn Bledsoe would score two Bullet runners on her double to left.
The Bullets met the Abilene Attack to decide first place. Hoelscher was flawless from the circle in the championship victory.
Tied at two each in the final inning, the Bullets’ offense responded to the challenge. Gabi Nelms, Hoelscher and Duer would score to make it 5-2. Alex would protect the victory by retiring the top of Abilene’s order in only seven pitches.
The Optimist Bullets include Trujillo, Duer, Bledsoe, Tajchman, Allie Jo Hiatt, Giselle Thirakul, Davies, Hoelscher, Savanna Cavanaugh and Nelms.
The Bullets’ record for the current season is 6-2 and will play in the Manhattan Spring Slam this coming weekend.
