The Manhattan Optimist Bullets went 3-2 to finish third at the USSSA Shawnee County Slug Fest this past weekend at Lake Shawnee.
In pool play, the Bullets would defeat the Topeka Fire-Storm 5-1. The Bullets would then defeat the Cyclones 15-0 and seal the top seed from their pool moving on to bracket play.
After a bye, the Bullets started bracket play by facing the Fire-Storm for the second time. The Bullets would continue to prevail against the Fire-Storm, winning 3-2 and remain unbeaten on the day.
The Bullets had too many errors and not enough runs to survive afrustrating 11-2 loss in the semifinals against the T-Town Angels.
Manhattan needed to win one more game to make it back for a rematch against the Angels in the title game. But, again, it would have to come against the Topeka Fire-Storm.
In the final inning of the game, the Bullets would find themselves down 5-4. With runners on second and third and no outs, the Bullets tried hard but were unable to find any more offense to push the runners across the plate, closing their weekend in third.
The Bullets, who are 27-9 in their inaguaral season — include Mady Trujillo, Rachel Allen, Saige Van Sickle, Rachel Duer, Ashlynn Bledsoe, Hailey Franson, Giselle Thirakul, Lauren Campuzano, Alex Hoelscher, Breanna Schroeder and Gabrielle Nelms.
Manhattan will travel to the Kansas City area this weekend for a tournament.
