The Optimist Bullets 12-and-under fastpitch softball team competed in the Cap City Showdown NIT tournament in Topeka this past weekend. The Bullets went 2-2-1 to place third.
The Bullets’ first pool game was against the Topeka Lunachix. Down 3-0 in the last inning, singles by Sydney Hefty, Mady Trujillo, and Katie Suther followed by a double by Rachel Allen would score two runs with two outs. Emma Faulkner doubled to bring in another run.
A catch by a Lunachix outfielder brought the third out, leaving the game tied. Allen pitched the entire game for the Bullets, striking out seven.
The Bullets lost their next pool game to the Abilene Attack 8-7, but would rebound with a 3-1 win against the Topeka Pink Thunder.
Faulkner and Hannah Divine drove in two of the Bullet runs and Allen drove in the other. Allen was the winning pitcher for the Bullets, striking out 10 and allowing only one hit the entire game.
The Bullets entered bracket play against the Optimist Xplosion. With both pitchers in the match turning in great performances, Bullet pitcher Rachel Allen would strike out 12 batters in a row before an opponent would reach base. Allen tossed the complete the game and finished with 15 strikeouts.
Offensive support from Hefty, Trujillo, Faulkner, Suther, Divine and Allen would boost the Bullets to a 3-2 win over the Xplosion.
The Bullets met the Lunachix in the semifinal and lost for the first time to them this year, 10-2. The Bullets would complete the weekend with their second straight third-place finish in tournament play.
The Optimist Bullets’ record is 11-9-1 in division play for the season.
The Bullets are home this weekend to play in the Bite Outta Lil Apple tournament at Anneberg Park.
