The Kansas State volleyball team’s Katie Brand was named Big 12 Rookie of the Week on Monday, becoming the first Wildcat to earn a weekly honor this season.
The redshirt-freshman setter helped K-State pick up three wins in four matches last week, including a five-game upset of No. 23 California.
Brand had 50 assists — matching her career-high — to go along with four kills, four blocks and 13 digs in the victory over the Golden Bears at Berkeley.
Brand had 9.88 assists and 2.94 digs per set last week, with the assists being the most among all Big 12 freshman and fourth-most overall in the conference. She was the only freshman in the Big 12 to average nine or more assists and two or more digs per set.
The native of Grand Island, Neb., compiled three double-doubles in the four matches, giving her a team-best six double-doubles this season. Brand notched 38 assists and 13 digs against Tulsa, 49 assists and 14 digs against Cal Poly, and 50 assists and 13 digs in the upset victory over Cal.
Brand is the third player in program history to be named Big 12 Rookie of the Week since the award was added in 2008. Prior to this season, Brand was selected as the Big 12 Preseason co-Freshman of the Year.
Sallie McLaurin of Oklahoma was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week and Brianne Riley of Kansas was named the conference’s Defensive Player of the Week.
Brand and the 9-1 Wildcats return to action this Friday when they travel to Fayetteville, Ark., for the Arkansas Invitational. K-State will start the tournament with a 7 p.m. match against the host Razorbacks on Friday.
