K-State volleyball’s Katie Brand has been selected to participate in the U.S. Collegiate National Team program, USA Volleyball announced Tuesday.
Brand is one of 36 athletes invited to USA Volleyball’s 2014 U.S. Collegiate National Team that will train and compete in conjunction with the USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships from June 22-July 1 in Minneapolis, Minn.
The native of Grand Island, Neb., earned the selection after participating in the National Team Open Tryout in Colorado Springs, Colo. from February 21-23.
An All-Big 12 Freshman Team selection in 2013, Brand led K-State with 1,056 assists last season, while also tallying 95 kills, 87 blocks, 27 aces and 169 points in 105 sets. Her kills, aces and points were the most by a K-State setter since 2007, while she was the first Big 12 freshman to average 10+ assists per set since 2010.
Brand is one of three athletes from the Big 12 selected to the U.S. Collegiate National Team program in June, as she is joined by Rachel Brummitt (Texas Tech, libero) and Julia Doyle (Oklahoma, setter).
After the training portion of the program, the 36 athletes will be divided into three equal teams that will compete in a round-robin event June 27-30. The round-robin may add an international team to increase the field to four teams that would complete June 26-30. This program is considered a second tryout for the U.S. Women’s National Team.
Brand and the Wildcats are in the midst of spring camp and will take part in the K-State Spring Tournament — held at Blue Valley West High School in Stilwell — this weekend. The first matches on Saturday start at 9 a.m.
