Board of Education discusses changes at MHS

By Bryan Richardson

The school board discussed changes for Manhattan High School that could take place for the 2013-14 school year at its winter retreat in February. The topics were senior early release, start time, open/closed lunch at MHS and the high school schedule.

Supt. Bob Shannon presented a tentative schedule of action and future board discussions Wednesday.

Senior early release — the MHS administration and department heads will discuss the existing senior early release option. A report will be due to Shannon by Oct. 15. The board will be presented this information and potentially take action no later than Nov. 7.

Morning start times for USD 383 schools — A special meeting will take place Oct. 10 to discuss the topic. The board will make a decision about elementary and secondary school start times on Oct. 17.

Open/closed lunch — A special meeting will take place Sept. 26 to discuss the topic. The board will make a decision about open/closed lunch on Oct. 3.

MHS schedule — A work group for developing schedule options will consist of Adams, MHS principal Terry McCarty, two MHS department heads, one board member and ex-officio members as needed. Three viable options are due to Shannon by Nov. 9. The board will be presented the schedule options on Nov. 21. A decision will be made Dec. 19.

Elementary schedule – A work group for developing schedule options will consist of Adams, professional development coordinator Ingrid Logan, two teachers (one each from primary/intermediate), two principals (one each from small/large building), one board member and ex-officio members as needed. Two to three viable options are due to Shannon by Dec. 14. The board will be presented the schedule options on Jan. 2, 2013. A decision will be made Jan. 30, 2013.
