Mitch Beims of Manhattan on Wednesday announced his intention to run for the USD 383 Board of Education.

Beims is a commodities trader for Tallgrass Commodities. Before moving to Manhattan, was a social studies teacher and coach in Russell and Colby, and he served on the Colby City Council. He also served as assistant principal and athletic director at Holton High School.

“I look forward to helping our school district move forward in developing all of our students,” Beims said. “I have the ability to see various perspectives relating to schools through my experience as an educator, my current employment with my company and as a father of two children.”

He said his candidacy was not motivated by the desire to pursue any particular political platform. “I just want to be more involved in the community and schools,” he said.

Beims earned a bachelor’s degree in secondary education from Kansas State University in 1996 and a master’s degree in educational administration from Fort Hays University in 2005. His wife, Cortney Beims, is a registered nurse. They have two children, Braden, 10, and Berkley, 5.
