By Jelani Yancey

The Manhattan Optimist Aftershock 14-and-under fastpitch softball team played in the USSSA C state tournament in Topeka at the Ken Berry Complex over the weekend.

The Aftershock defeated the Blue Heat from Holton 2-1 in their first game.  Jayden Weers and Makayla Tegtmeier shared the pitching duties with Tegtmeier getting the win. Maigan Powers had two singles and Emily Brummett added a single for the offense.

In the second game, the eventual third-place winner of the tournament, Chase County Explosion, defeated the Aftershock 10-3. Olivia Lee took the loss with Tegtmeier and Weers pitching in relief. Madison Rogers had two singles.  Brummett, Weers and Cassidy Cheever each added a single.

In the final game, the Blue Heat had a big first inning and won the game 5-3.  Weers was the losing pitcher.  Suzanna Gevock, Ashley Faiola, and Brummett singled with doubles offered up by Powers, Rogers and Tegtmeier.  The Aftershock — 6-21 on the season — will play next at Fun Valley in Hutchinson this weekend.
