Accused rapist pleads not guilty

By Bethany Knipp

A Fort Riley soldier accused of rape today pleaded not guilty to each of the seven sex crime charges lodged against him.

Christopher Bates, 31, appeared in Riley County District Court for his arraignment, where the charges against him were read by Judge David Stutzman.

Bates is facing three counts of rape, three counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child and one count of aggravated criminal sodomy.

Prosecutors allege that Bates committed sex crimes against three girls last summer, and that the victims reportedly were all under age 13.

Bates’ trial is scheduled for April 28 and is expected to last five days.
