Authorities have identified a 72-year-old rural Manhattan man as the victim of a fatal car-pedestrian accident early Saturday.

They said Carl Schurle, whose address was listed as 3402 Kitten Creek, Manhattan, was walking in the eastbound lanes in the 5900 block of Anderson Avenue when he was struck by a vehicle also traveling east.

Authorities identified the driver of the vehicle as 18-year-old Jacob Brazzle, 3502 Silver Creek, Manhattan, and said Brazzle stopped at the scene when the accident occurred. The accident took place before 7 a.m. at a time when the sun had not yet risen. The scene is about two miles west of Anderson’s intersection with Scenic Drive, and within a mile or two from the homes of both the driver and the deceased.

No charges had been filed against Brazzle as of mid-day Monday, and there was no indication whether any would be. Authorities said the accident remains under investigation.

Riley County Police Department officers called to the scene found Schurle to be deceased, and his body was transported to Irvin Parkview Funeral Home.
