7 vehicles involved in adjacent wrecks on K-18

Seven cars were involved in two accidents near each other Friday morning on a the westbound bridge of K-18 just before the Ogden exit. At least one person was taken to the hospital for injuries.

The first accident occurred when a Riley County police officer had stopped his vehicle on the east side of the bridge at mile marker 182.8 for a routine traffic stop. The officer, Jamie R. Douglass, reported to dispatch that he was struck from behind by a vehicle at about 8:45 a.m. The Kansas Highway Patrol reported that a third vehicle “side-swiped” the police car while it was parked. An ambulance was dispatched to the location and Douglass was transported to Mercy Regional Health Center.

Lt. Michael Quintanar of the Riley County Police Department said Douglass was transported to “get checked out,” but had no further details to the officer’s condition. He said the accident was being investigated by the Kansas Highway Patrol because an RCPD officer was involved in the accident.

Shortly after that accident, a second crash occurred on the bridge, Quintanar said. Although the accidents happened near each other and at approximately the same time, they were not related, he said. No other injuries were reported.

A total of seven cars that appeared to be damaged could be seen stopped on the bridge following the wrecks. No other information was immediately available from the highway patrol.
