17ers open play in Zone tournament

The American Legion Manhattan Manko senior 17ers got some action in during the Washburn Team Camp this weekend, playing at Yager Stadium in Topeka on Friday.

The 17ers opened play in the Zone tournament today in Leavenworth, playing Atchison in the double elimination tournament. The 17ers could advance to AAA state by winning the Zone tournament.

The 17ers opened the weekend with a pair of wins on Friday in Topeka, beating Home Plate Cactus 3-1 and the Junction City Blue Jays, 7-0.

Jesse Steinbring was 1 for 2 with a two-run double in Game 1, while Chris Klug added two hits in three appearances. Kellen Myers had the other hit for Manhattan as it was out-hit 5 to 4.

Ethan Fabrizius pitched four innings, giving up one run on four hits with one walk and five strikeouts. Steinbring and Evan Olson finished the game on the mound.

In Game 2, the 17ers scored six runs in the sixth inning en route to the shutout win over Junction City. The 17ers logged 12 hits, while holding the Blue Jays to just 2.

Josh Klug led the offense with a 3 for 4 game with two runs scored and an RBI. Dustan Whipple was 2 for 2 with two RBIs and Josh Mullin had two hits.

The 17ers sent 13 batters to the plate, and eight had hits while nine reached base.

Steinbring pitched four innings and gave up one hit, striking out six. Mike Leeper pitched two innings and Conner Brown pitched the other inning.
