17ers fall 8-6 in Kansas City

The American Legion Manhattan Manko senior 17ers grabbed a 5-0 lead early on Tuesday in Kansas City, but couldn’t hang on in an 8-6 loss to the Johnson County Hornets.

The 17ers scored five runs in the third inning of the wood-bat contest, but the Hornets answered with two in the bottom of the inning, and then scored three each in the fifth and sixth innings to go ahead 8-5.

Manhattan tacked on one run in the top of the seventh inning, but couldn’t rally all the way back.

Eric Prockish was tagged with the loss, pitching 1 1/3 innings and allowing three runs on four hits. Grant Munsen and Jared Ayres each pitched a scoreless inning to end the game.

Jeremy Broadwater got the start and went four innings, allowing three runs on five hits with five walks and five strikeouts.

AJ Epperson led the 17ers with a 2 for 4 game and two RBIs. Garrett Francis and Ian Hart each had a hit and an RBI. Alex Huerta had a hit and an RBI and Isaac Leon scored two runs.
