One person was killed and three others were hospitalized with serious injuries as a result of a Sunday morning shooting at a Manhattan apartment complex.
None of the victims have yet been publicly identified by authorities. Neither has a suspect, although authorities did confirm that one person was taken into custody.
Sources indicated that the person killed was a male, and that two of the wounded were females. Their injuries were considered serious, although details were not available.
Officers responded the University Garden apartment complex at 900 Garden Way, at approximately 4:10 a.m. Sunday, after receiving reports of multiple gunshots fired. There, officials said, they found several victims of gunshot wounds, one of whom had already died.
Officer Matthew Droge said a single suspect, whose identity is being withheld, was taken into custody for further investigation. As of Monday, the person was still in custody but did not appear on arrest reports. Droge said a person may be held for 48 hours before they are formally arrested.
The names of the victims were also being withheld pending notification of their families.
Officials did not release further details on the shooting, including the type of firearm used or a possible motive. They said those details will be released Monday night.
There was a report that one of the victims told police that the shooting appeared to be a random act, although authorities have not said whether they believe that to be the case.
Droge said the department does not believe the incident poses any further danger to the public’s safety and asks that anyone with information about these crimes to contact Manhattan/Riley County Crime Stoppers at (785) 539-7777 or toll free at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), or visit their website, www.manhattanrileycountycrimestoppers.com, for other options.
